Welcome to Fifties Foto Flashback! There are a billion photos on the internet of every single topic you can possibly think of and even of topics you never knew existed. Obviously, you will have a tendency to search for subjects that you are interested in. Seeing that we are well into the 21st Century, and preoccupied with current-day BS, (and man is it BS), I had no idea how many photos there are of yesteryear. I was pleasantly surprised to find so many photos from the 1950’s, not only of celebrities, but of just regular folks too. These photos are vital to keeping the past alive for future generations. Each one is like a portal looking back into time, showing what it was like in The Best Era Ever. In this section, I will feature some photos from the 1950’s that have really stood out to me amongst the many. I hope you like them. (Please remember I don’t own anything.)
Fifties Foto Flashback January 2019, S1 E4: “Three Legends and Jimmy Velvet”
For this episode of Fifties Foto Flashback, I’m posting another fabulous photo of some amazing legendary musicians: Jerry Lee Lewis, Don Everly and Rock n Roll Pioneer, Buddy Holly. Oh, and there’s also a guy named Jimmy Velvet in this photo too.
No, I hadn’t heard of Jimmy Velvet until now, but I’m still learning the History of the music industry, and just when I think I know everyone, I find another name I’d never heard of.
I picked this photo mainly because I love the looks on their faces. Honestly, I have no idea why they all look so somber and intense. Don Everly looks almost worried; by his expression, he looks like Buddy is trying to defuse a bomb. (“Don’t cut the wrong wire!”) And what’s that on Don’s left ring finger? Is that a wedding band? Someone should have told him to take that thing off, the fans don’t want to see that. You’re killing my buzz, Don! I don’t know where his brother Phil is in this photo. Maybe he was in the bathroom. It seems odd that Don’s there without Phil.
At the piano sits Jerry Lee Lewis. This is probably the only photo I’ve seen of him where he’s actually looking serious and subdued. Then there’s this Jimmy Velvet fella who is looking on with a sort of… uncertainty. It’s the kind of ambivalence you might see at a board meeting when someone brings up a risky investment proposal.
As for Buddy himself, he’s playing something, I wish I knew what. By the melancholy look on his face it’s “Nothing Else Matters” by Metallica. (Kidding, of course.) Whatever it is, he’s concentrating really hard. It’s not like him to look so glum.
I don’t know where this photo was taken or when, exactly, but it looks like it was probably sometime in 1958. Oh, one more mystery: Jerry Allison and Joe B. Mauldin are also MIA. Perhaps they went out for a smoke. Although, they could have just smoked inside back then. Seeing as they were Stars, they probably could have done whatever they wanted. Except be in this picture.
So there you have it: A really cool picture of a some legendary fellas which I turned into an EQ test. In reality, this photo was probably just shot at a moment when no one happened to be smiling. That’s it!
I hope you enjoyed this episode of Fifties Foto Flashback. Please join me next month when I post another random photo from The Best Era Ever.
