Song Surveys

On The Road To The Great 88!

Hi Folks! It’s Fall and that means it’s time to start voting in the best music survey ever: That’s right! I’m talking about The Grooveyard Great 88!

2020’s survey will be the 9th Annual Great 88 poll in which listeners of The Grooveyard at WCWP 88.1 FM will be able to vote for their favorite Malt Shop Era songs from the 1950’s through the year 1963.

This will be my 3rd year voting in the Great 88. In the past 2 years, I’ve talked mainly about my voting in the Finals, but what’s even more important, I think, is the preliminary round. After all, songs can’t make it to the finals without passing the preliminary round!

Preliminary Round:

The Preliminary Round will officially begin on September 6th, 2020.

In the preliminary round, there are 9 catagories:
1955 (and before)
1956
1957
1958
1959
1960
1961
1962, and finally,
1963

Listeners can vote daily for up to 10 songs in each category. The results are posted as each section closes. Voting in each category is open for 2 weeks.

Early Voting Round:

New for this year is a one-week long Early Voting Round! That means that the ALL NINE polls opened on Saturday August 29 and will close on Saturday September 5. So for the first time ever, you can vote daily, for one week, in all nine rounds.

Once Early Voting ends, the Preliminary Round will officially begin. From September 6, til mid-November, we’ll be voting in an individual section (for example, songs from the year 1961) Each section will be open for 2 weeks. When one section closes, a new poll will open each week, each lasting for two weeks and closing at the end of The Grooveyard show on Saturday nights, 10pm ET.

Final Round:

Starting in November, you can vote daily in the Final Round which includes 3 more surveys:
1957 and before
1958 – 1960
1961 – 1963

These will be the songs that make it to the Finals, now it’s time to pick which ones actually make The Great 88– and in which order they make it in! (That’s important, you know!)

Last year’s Number One Song was “Be My Baby” by The Ronettes. (No, I didn’t vote for it, but I did vote for last year’s Number 2 song, “Come Go With Me” by The Del-Vikings)

The Great 88 COUNTDOWN SHOW will be at the end of December, and it’s not to be missed. Of course, it’s all the more exciting if you VOTE!

So what songs am I voting for this year? No telling! That is, until I reveal my picks after this year’s show. Last year, I guess you could hold me partly responsible for the invasion of The Everly Brothers. But I’ve been a fool for less a thing. 🙂

The Great 88 voting might sound complicated when I try to explain it, but it’s really easy, not to mention fun. The only thing I find complicated is narrowing it down to 10 songs for each year. I just love so many songs, so it’s hard to choose!

Oh yeah. I just want to add that I believe in voting in other things too, but here at Retro Dee’s Guide to the Best Era Ever, I don’t like to get political. No. But any time folks get a chance to vote for anything important, I believe in doing so. And that’s all I’m gonna say!
